There is a 19th-century saying by British educational writer William Edward Hickson: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again." I do believe in the adage that persevering on till we succeed! It is extremely rare for someone to succeed in something on their first attempt. Cooking is the best example. When we cook our first dish, there will definitely be flaws in it, be it in terms of presentation or taste. But after much practice, there will likely be some forms of improvements. However, there are certain things that require more perseverance to succeed in it. For instance, learning a new language. There is no way we can become fluent in a new language overnight. In fact, it may take months or even years for us to become proficient in it.

Furthermore, as we strive to succeed, it is undeniable that there will be many failures along the way. But we must not let these failures keep us from succeeding. Many entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley call it “fail fast, learn quickly”. What that means is that when we fail, we should not drag the failure but instead find out what we have done wrong and learn quickly from our mistakes. When keep trying repeatedly, it does not mean that we simply repeat what we have done blindly. If one way does not work and we keep repeating the same way, then we will never be able to succeed. We need to see how we can improve on it and ensure that we don’t repeat the same mistake. One way we can identify our mistake is by being open to feedback from others. Sometimes it is easier for other people to identify our own blind spots and from there we can correct it.

However, persevering till success is not always true of all situations. I believe that there are times when we need to pause and reflect if we are really cut out for the thing we are pursuing. Sometimes, we may not be cut out for one thing but may be able to excel greatly in another. Using sports as an example, if a person tries to play table tennis and realises that he is not good at it. He can keep practicing to try master the skill. He might get better as he goes along, but perhaps there could be another sport that he is better at and will excel in.

It is believed that if we don't succeed, we should keep trying until we finally do. Do you believe in that? Why or why not?
