I do not agree that music should be made free for everyone. Music is an industry in itself and the producers, singers and artists in this industry rely on the sales of their music to make a living. If music were to be made free, then where would their source of income be?

Recently, there have been many reports on the illegal download of music. Using Singapore as an example, in a 2014 survey of 900 Singaporeans, it is found that at least 1 in 2 Singaporeans download music illegal with 17% who do so weekly. Illegal download of music, also known as music piracy, has been labeled by many as the “social norm,” and most people have the mindset that since everybody does it and everybody is used to it, so it doesn't feel like a crime. This is very worrisome as music that are produced is someone’s livelihood and illegally downloading is essentially stealing their hard work. The artist isn’t compensated, so all the money that they invested to make music isn’t recovered. Instead, these pirates who set up piracy sites will profit from online ads and subscriptions. So while you are saving a few dollars, you are also effectively taking away an artist’s well deserved gains and re-directing them into the coffers of pirates and criminals. Eventually, these artists may decide to stop making music and that will be great loss to the public.

Although music shouldn’t be made free, but they should be priced reasonably and made affordable. In the past, physical copies of CD albums used to be the craze. However, with the advent of new music streaming apps, everything is being digitalized and the demand for physical CD has been steadily declining. Digitalizing music can help to lower the cost of producing it as costs can be saved on producing hard copies of music albums, which makes music more affordable. Presently, there are many subscription-based streaming services like Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music in the market that charges you on a monthly subscription. The prices of such streaming services are not exorbitant and with only a small fee, you are able to stream all your favourite music of all genres in one place. Additionally, if one only wants to listen to a few selected tracks, Apple iTunes is selling individual tracks at only 99 cents which are competitively priced.
