Many students in Singapore struggle with mastering the Language subjects. The English language is arguably the most important subject in Singapore as it is the most common medium of communication. Furthermore, the daily use of Singapore Colloquial English (Singlish) is exacerbating the problem further. A strong foundation in the English language is vital to acing other subjects such as General Paper, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, etc. and ultimately getting placements in Ivy League Universities. At The Rationale Thinking, we specialise in coaching our students in the English Language and General Paper. Upper Secondary English Tuition Programme Sample Essay

Describe some people in your life whom you admire and explain why they have shaped your personal values.

I recall fondly the first time I saw them burst onto the rehearsal floor; Ping and An, the pair of jaunty lanky twins playing drunk family members at a family reunion. In a few moments they orchestrated a lively commotion, playing off each other with a finely tuned intuition only twins seem to share. Those standing by at the wings of the studio—myself and other actors playing smaller roles—we were riveted, left dreaming of the day we would magically manifest the same virtuosity they had on stage. I continued to look towards them with a distant reverence until a couple years later after we had graduated. I undertook the role of a Playwright and joined their burgeoning theatre company. This circumstance established the very premise that our friendship would blossom in and beyond.

An is the enigma of the two, suavely strumming on his guitar as a trail of women swoon in his wake—and for good reasons they swoon. He is a gentle spirit. His very presence has been soothing to have in times of tribulation with his steadfast belief that life is indeed bountiful, and would reveal its treasures to me if I remained patient and eager. His unwavering positivity and hopeful outlook has left a deep impression on my own outlook, and I am ever more sanguine for it. An has taught me the vital lesson that trusting and moving forward in a process that currently seems on the surface tumultuous, will eventually lead to a satisfying resolution.

Buoyant, effervescent, peppy—be it an affectionate groan or roiling laughter that he elicits, nobody can deny that Ping’s the life of the party. His eyes shine with a childlike sensibility. He is never afraid to toss out the joke, regardless of whether he is the butt of it. And yet he is shrewd, insightful when he needs to be. An aspiring Psychologist, Ping is always ready to offer indiscriminate support and a sound word of advice to those who approach him; and they do by the droves, with their broken hearts and existential crises. Ping has taught me to confront the often ludicrous reality of growing up with courage and a grin, that I am allowed to not take myself too seriously.

Aside from the twins’ manifold talents and virtues, my mouth still hangs agape thinking about their capacity for acceptance. If there is any moment I have glimpsed what it means to love unconditionally, it is through their generosity. Compassion seems to be their natural language; they offer aid without inhibition, are self-sacrificing without so much a second thought. Even their home reflects their temperaments, preserving the vestiges of what I presume to be the ‘kampong spirit’; neighbours and relatives strolling through their open front door for a meal, a chat, sometimes bearing gifts. They have raised the bar for me, of what it means to be a good human being, and I can only hope to emulate the way they are so unreserved with their affections.
