General Paper Examination

While I was doing quite decently for GP in J1, I got a horrible shock in J2 as my grade plummeted to an E during mid-years. As the course I was aiming for in university required at least a B, I knew I had to do something about it. It was less than 6 months to the A-level examinations when I joined Mr Wong’s tuition and initially, I was quite sceptical as to what a few months of tuition could do to help me at all. But right after the first lesson, I knew I had made the right choice, as not only was Mr Wong engaging, he was able to break down complicated current affairs into bite-sized pieces we could use easily as examples in our essays.

Although it was a group tuition, Mr Wong was attentive to the needs of each individual. For example, after knowing that I was keen on writing about the arts and media, he printed extra notes that were useful to me and made sure I paid special attention in class when he was going through those topics. His constant re-emphasis on important examples ensured I committed them to memory, and I was ultimately able to apply what I learnt from him in my A-levels.

Mr Wong’s use of structure in his teaching was very useful for both essays and comprehensions as it provided clarity and a guideline for me even as I went through my exams.

My GP grade during the prelims jumped to a B and I eventually scored an A in the A level. Mr Wong’s tuition not only taught me how to be exam smart, but also increased my knowledge of the world by introducing me to issues and concerns I would not have otherwise taken an interest in.

I found myself always getting a Subpass for my General Paper before attending Mr Wong's GP tuition. In view that I got a C6 for my ‘O’ Level English, many teachers have warned me of the high possibility of dropping to a U grade as my foundation was weak. I decided to join Mr Wong's General Paper tuition in May and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.
Mr. Wong's lessons are always well planned and executed. He constantly prepares lesson notes and current affairs articles for us to utilize in our work and examinations, ensuring that his students are always updated with the latest information and knowledge.
His lessons are interesting as he encourages his students to speak up and voice their opinions and share their knowledge with the rest of the class. This proved to be extremely effective and within a short span of 6 months, I managed to improve tremendously from an “S” grade to an “A” grade for my ‘A’ level Examinations, Jumping a total of 6 grades!

Is it possible to jump from an E to an A within 3 months? Xin Hui did it!

Now, she is studying in SMU School of Law.

I joined Mr Wong’s tuition a week before beginning J1 as I had heard that GP was totally different from O Level English. Sure enough, I found GP a challenge despite having done well for the O Levels. Thankfully, Mr Wong was able to help me improve in the time between the start of J1 and the CTs, where I scored a B with an 88th percentile.

Mr Wong’s essays make use of relevant real-world examples that are able to highlight the main point of the essays well. He also goes through current affairs in every lesson with us, keeping us informed of events that are relevant for use in GP. Mr Wong’s teaching style also caters to every student, as he personally looks through every essay outline and gives us feedback, making the resulting model essay relatable to every student.

For Comprehension, Mr Wong has a useful set of comprehension notes that are used effectively in short-answer questions and summary. In AQ, where I faced the most problems, Mr Wong provided effective AQ packs that contain news articles relevant to the AQ topic in the Singaporean context. The content in the AQ packs were especially useful, more so in the rarer and harder topics, and it was extremely useful for revision.

Mr Wong is also more than simply a tutor to his students. He gives special attention and help to every one of his students. Even after my first lesson there, Mr Wong asked me about my aspirations and gave me advice on how to achieve my goals. He also gives extra help and practices to students when they consult him.

With the help of Mr Wong, I was able to bridge the gap between O Level English and GP in JC1. I am grateful to him for not only helping me succeed academically but also helping me to improve myself.

I first joined Mr Wong at the end of J1. That was in 2016. Back then, I was barely scraping Es. I was clueless about how to structure my essays, and was weak at Short Answer Questions and especially the AQ component. My content was also very poor.

When I came to Mr Wong, I knew he could really help me. He looked at my strengths and weaknesses and advised me accordingly. He told me to focus on Human Rights and Democracy. As I attended his lessons, I also learnt the crucial linguistic skills for SAQ. I learnt to identify the questions accurately and use the correct linguistic skills. Mr Wong also provided a lot of good and very relevant content in his lectures, both local and international examples, that I could use easily in my AQ and essays.

Mr Wong is also a dedicated teacher. When I submitted essays, he marked them and helped me to improve. Nearer the A level, he gave consultations where he gave lots of pointers. For example, I like the way he uses critical thinking to make the arguments logically sound and persuasive.

So, with Mr Wong’s help, my GP grade steadily improved to a B in prelims and I got an A at the A level. I’m very grateful to Mr Wong, he is really an excellent GP teacher.

I joined Mr Wong in March 2017, 9 months before my ‘A’ Level. I had scored an S for my recent GP exam and thus decided to try The Rationale Thinking Centre. My foundation in GP was also extremely weak at that time as I had taken KI in the first year and had very little knowledge of GP at JC 2.

However, joining Mr Wong’s class turned out to be an amazing choice as he was able to play to my strengths as a student and coached me to not only become good at the subject, but actually enjoy it. Mr Wong is an extremely committed and dependable tutor who goes the extra mile to give his students the extra edge. He used to give us weekly current affairs articles on the latest happenings as well as research papers on important topics, which helped me build up my content. His weekly vocabulary quizzes and model essays improved my language not only in terms of word choice, but also sentence structure. Lastly, his interesting take on using syntactic and semantics to tackle paper 2 also allowed me to logically answer questions and present them.

Through Mr Wong’s tuition classes, I ended up getting an A for my General Paper in the ‘A’ Level examinations. Now, I’m in the NUS Law Faculty under the Bachelor of Laws programme. If I could make such a big improvement, I am sure that, with Mr Wong’s help, you could do so as well.

Mr Wong is a very dedicated teacher and mentor. Not only does he provide excellent study materials that were imperative in tackling both GP paper 1 and 2, he also takes a step further by providing his personal views and advice to help his students in planning their future education and career.
He incorporates the latest news articles, especially politics, from various credible resources both internationally and locally in his lessons which made lessons a lot more interesting and were very useful content for GP.

I especially liked the AQ pack and content notes of varying topics that Mr Wong provided which supplemented my existing school notes. Heavy content and facts were condensed into simplified notes and it really made GP easier for me to learn and understand! I also find the linguistic skills notes that Mr Wong equipped his students to be very effective in tackling questions in comprehension questions, as compared to the skills that my school taught me.

Under the tutelage of Mr Wong, I was able to jump from a 0th percentile in school to an A grade for GP at the A Level Exam. It is a privilege for me to be Mr Wong’s student and I am thankful for his guidance in helping me achieve such a colossal improvement.

Mr Wong is a very dedicated teacher. He commits himself to his students and is determined to improve our grades, regardless of the amount of time it takes. His notes are tremendous, they are precise and full of content that we can use for our exams. Aside from that, he also provides us with model essays that implement the new vocabulary that he teaches us all the time. He also helps us with comprehension by teaching us linguistic skills and his AQ packs are very useful for attempting the AQ. My General Paper grade jumped from an S grade to an A for my A Level. Mr Wong goes beyond the call of duty and I see him as not only my tutor but also my mentor.

I first joined The Rationale Thinking in early 2016. At that time, I was scoring a Subpass for my General Paper consistently for tests and exams. After joining Mr. Edwin Wong’s class, I was inundated with a lot of content about current affairs and important news every lesson. From a myopic standpoint, I was afraid that I couldn’t keep up with his pace. However, on the contrary, Mr. Wong helped me by giving me personalised tips I could use to write my essays with better fluidity and impact. He also gave me numerous tips on how to answer the questions in comprehension. Due to Mr. Wong’s teaching methodology, quality and commitment of and towards teaching, I jumped from an S to an A in my GCE A Level Examinations in 2016. I am very grateful to have such a devoted teacher and I know that with the help of Mr. Wong, any student who believes that they are able to will too, achieve stellar results.

When I first came to Mr Wong in middle of Sec 3, my English grade was C5. Back then, my command of English was really poor. Furthermore, I didn’t know how to write argumentative essays as I didn't know any real world examples and was very bad at explaining my points.

Mr Wong immediately advised me on how to improve. For example, reading news articles that he gave out during class, and listening to the BBC world service when I commute has helped me to know more current affairs.
My writing style also improved a lot under Mr Wong. Mr Wong teaches us to use critical thinking and takes us step by step through the thinking process. His teaching is very logical and has helped me improve a lot in my essays.

Mr Wong does not just care about academics, he is also very supportive. He is always concerned for the welfare of his students. Mr Wong also never stops pushing me to aim high. Knowing that I wanted to major in Computer Engineering, he always encourages me to aim high and work towards a PSC scholarship and study at MIT.

Mr Wong is a very inspiring teacher and motivates me to do well in my studies. Before I met him, I was a playful student and didn’t care about my studies. But he encouraged me to work hard, so I studied hard for my O Level and am now a J1 at Raffles Institution. Thanks Mr Wong!

I joined Mr Wong’s GP tuition fairly late. It was around the end of July, just a short 3-4 months before A level. At that point in time I had just scored an E grade in the recent CT2 exam in school and was quite worried because As was just round the corner. Luckily I joined Mr Wong’s tuition which helped me attain an A grade in the recent A level examination.

Mr Wong’s focus on linguistic skills to tackle the various comprehension questions were extremely helpful. These skills are not taught in school and if mastered well you will definitely ace your paper 2. Armed with such skills, I was able to attempt them systematically using Mr Wong’s method which made answering them easier. Moreover, Mr Wong’s AQ pack is really useful. Not only did it help me when crafting my AQ responses it is also applicable for essay writings. To save time, he would underline the key points from the lengthy passages and for someone like me who had an extremely short runway, this was pretty much a lifesaver.

Furthermore, Mr Wong’s model essays and class materials to prep us for paper 1 were really helpful. They were all done in-house so there’s no way you’ll be able to get them outside. The essays and relevant extra articles are clear and concise with a plethora of vocabulary for me to pick up. And considering the fact that I joined the class so late, I am really grateful for Mr Wong’s dedication in helping each and everyone of us to excel. Many of the key topics for Paper 1 were covered in class in the first half of the year and needless to say I missed it. Not only did Mr Wong prepare these notes and essays for me he also went through my school essays with me. I am really thankful for the extra help because I really needed it.

Lastly, Mr Wong is more than a teacher and always goes beyond the call of duty. Despite his busy schedule, especially nearing the O and A Level examinations, Mr Wong still made time to go through questions with me for my interview. Even after completing my As, he is still my higher ed and career guidance mentor.
I am just really glad that I stumbled upon this tuition centre that helped me turn things around in a short span of a few months from an E to an A. Unlike your usual tuition centres, it does not simply revolve around achieving distinctions but it also incorporates space for personal growth.

When I first joined Mr Wong during my JC2, I obtained an S grade for my General Paper. I was clueless about international politics, as I had little knowledge about events happening around the world. Mr Wong gave us up-to-date information and taught us how to incorporate the recent happenings as examples in our essays. He always follows the news religiously and I remember once coming for lesson on Saturday, we received the latest Brexit news dated at Saturday 3am! That is the level of commitment and obsession that he has for work.

Every week, there was vocabulary test given and I could sense a notable improvement in my language and this was pointed out by my school General Paper teacher too. Mr Wong never failed to make the lessons fun and engaging by asking pointed questions and his satirical sense of humour makes GP tuition really fun.

Even after I graduated from his class, Mr Wong still goes beyond the call of his duty to help me in improving my Personal Statement for application to Medical Schools here. Despite his busy schedule, he still makes time to go through with his graduated students the potential questions that could be asked at medical school interviews. I am grateful to find a great Mentor and Teacher who is willing to impart his skills, knowledge and professional career advice for me. I would definitely recommend the Rationale Thinking Learning Centre as it has helped me towards achieving my ambition of becoming a full-fledged Doctor!
